Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP)

Worker, rural-community and entrepreneur options for people planning to make Alberta their home.

Before you start

Worker selection uses an expression-of-interest system. Meeting basic criteria does not guarantee an invitation.

Since 7 April 2026 a Worker EOI carries a $135 fee, and EOIs submitted on or after 25 February 2026 must include wage and hours-of-work information. Several streams are close to their 2026 allocation, so check Alberta’s processing page for remaining spaces before you plan around a route.

Program highlights

Use these highlights to identify the guidance to review. They are not a complete eligibility test or a statement that every route is accepting applications.

  • Alberta Opportunity

For qualifying workers already employed in Alberta. Review occupation, permit type and employment history.

  • Alberta Express Entry

For selected federal Express Entry candidates, through defined pathways such as the Accelerated Tech Pathway, priority sector draws and the Law Enforcement Pathway. Each pathway has its own criteria and its own remaining allocation.

  • Rural Renewal

Connects eligible workers with participating designated communities and employers. Criteria changed on 1 January 2026, including endorsement allocation limits for each community, so confirm the community can still endorse you.

  • Tourism and Hospitality

For qualifying Alberta workers with eligible sector employment. This stream is close to its 2026 allocation, so confirm remaining spaces before relying on it.

  • Dedicated Health Care Pathway

A pathway for eligible health professionals; review the applicable Express Entry or non-Express Entry requirements.

  • Entrepreneur options

Rural Entrepreneur, Graduate Entrepreneur, Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur and Farm streams address different business profiles.

Make the assessment specific to you

Bring your work permit, Alberta employment history, job duties and any community endorsement. For health occupations, include registration or licensing correspondence.

Check the role

Match actual job duties to the NOC; do not choose a code solely by the job title.

Check the timing

List permit, language-test and passport expiry dates alongside any invitation deadline.

Check the destination

Explain your own practical reasons for living here, including employment and family arrangements.

Check what is missing

Separate evidence you already hold from documents that an employer, school or licensing body must provide.

Documents to prepare

Identity and status

Passports, family records, current permits, expiry dates and immigration history.

Occupation and employment

Detailed duties, dates, hours, wages, employer contacts and supporting payroll records.

Language and education

Accepted language-test results, credentials, transcripts and any required educational credential assessment.

Settlement and connections

A realistic destination plan, relevant work or study history, family connections and financial evidence.

This is a preparation list. The stream-specific government checklist controls the actual submission. Keep a copy of every filed form and supporting record.

From assessment to permanent residence

  1. Choose a suitable pathwayCompare your actual circumstances with the current guide and intake notice.
  2. Confirm evidence and participationResolve employer, community, licensing or business requirements before registering.
  3. Follow the selection processSubmit an EOI or application only through the route that applies. Track invitations and deadlines.
  4. Prepare the provincial submissionSupport every material claim with consistent evidence and report relevant changes.
  5. Complete the federal stageIf nominated, follow the correct permanent residence route and the nomination conditions.

Plan beyond the application

Build a calendar of the decisions you control: obtaining records, booking a language test, asking an employer for evidence and arranging a consultation. Keep government processing estimates separate from your permit-expiry plan.

If your job, family circumstances, address or status changes, review whether you must update the relevant authority. Keep a dated record of correspondence. Do not assume an application in progress protects your temporary status.

Questions before you apply

What is the first issue to check?

Worker selection uses an expression-of-interest system. Meeting basic criteria does not guarantee an invitation.

What evidence is especially useful?

Bring your work permit, Alberta employment history, job duties and any community endorsement. For health occupations, include registration or licensing correspondence.

Does nomination guarantee permanent residence?

No. Provincial nomination and the federal permanent residence decision are separate stages. Admissibility and federal requirements still apply.

Can I keep working while waiting?

An EOI, invitation or nomination does not by itself authorize work. Review your current permit and any eligible extension or support-letter route before it expires.

How much will it cost?

Budget separately for provincial and federal fees, language testing, credential assessments, translations, medical examinations and professional services. Check official fee pages when preparing your application.

What should I bring to a consultation?

Bring your CV, language results, education, permits, employment offer and duties, family details, previous refusals and any provincial correspondence.
